For ResFrac August Office Hours, we had a presentation from ResFrac Reservoir and Completions Technical Team Lead, Ankush Singh, on his recently published paper “Designing the Record-Breaking Enhanced Geothermal System at Project Cape.” This paper discusses the design and simulation work for Project Cape, a 400 MWe Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) in Utah that achieved a record flow rate of over 100 kg/s. The study details the modeling of fracture propagation, proppant placement, and thermal performance using a fully integrated hydraulic fracturing and reservoir simulator. The findings indicate that tighter well spacing and larger fracturing treatments result in higher short-term flow rates but may lead to earlier thermal breakthrough in the long term.
