For our November Office Hours, ResFrac Geothermal Lead Koenraad Beckers presented “Flow Control Devices to Improve Thermal Longevity and Techno-Economics of Enhanced Geothermal Systems.” This presentation addresses the critical challenge of non-uniform fracture flow in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and investigates the techno-economic benefits of using Flow Control Devices (FCDs), specifically combined with sliding sleeves, to improve reservoir heat extraction and thermal longevity. Non-uniform fracture flow can lead to premature thermal decline and significantly lower cumulative power generation. Leveraging ResFrac coupled with FGEM (a geothermal techno-economic simulator), simulations are presented demonstrating a significant reduction in thermal decline and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) using orifice-based FCDs.
