Where Does the Proppant Go? Tracking It Could Unlock More Oil

The equivalent of an Air Tag that can track proppant hidden deep and far afield could be the holy grail for U.S. shale players looking to increase production.

Knowing exactly where the proppant goes beyond the typical 12 to 18 inches from the wellbore could reshape completion designs, well spacing and ultimately recovery efficiency.

“If we knew where the proppant was located, that would tell us whether we should space our wells differently, should we put more racks in the wine rack,” Terry Palisch, chief technology officer for Carbo Ceramics, told Hart Energy. “But we have to somehow understand where we’re depleting the rock, and the proppant location should help tell us that.”
